A new development from 3M aims to reduce dust in woodworking, automotive, and construction applications and improve sanding processes. The company’s Clean Sanding system is an abrasive disc with holes in a spiral pattern, a backup pad, an orbital sanding power tool, and a filter bag. The disc’s holes—created in a spiral pattern with innovative laser converting technology—and the backup pad work together to remove debris from the work surface during sanding and funnel dust to the bag. Lessening dust reduces scratches in the work and gives the user a better view. Also, when an abrasive disc becomes clogged with dust, it loses effectiveness and has to be replaced. The new system extends the life of the pad and promotes better sanding performance.
