A major medical device company held its 50th-anniversary celebration during an annual convention in Minneapolis for up to 1,500 guests. The theme was “Once in a Blue Moon,” and shades of blue were used in the linens, centerpieces, lighting, buffet treatments, maps, napkins, entertainment costumes, banners, pillows, M&Ms, baseball caps for the transportation team, and aprons for the wait staff. The event highlight was a showgirl in a blue costume swinging 20 feet over the dance floor all night.

The planners were challenged to provide adequate room for guests in a variety of areas on several floors of the event venue, including vacant showroom space, corridors, and three floors of a large atrium. The client also requested graphics that would brand the event, such as large banners, napkins printed with the company name, and other event materials. Graphic elements also featured moon images to tie in to the event theme.

Each of the eight buffets was custom built using wood and spandex. Blue spandex covered the top of the tables and an eight-by-three-foot column (that was lit from within) came up through the middle of the tabletop. In a crowd of people, these columns allowed guests to locate the food stations from anywhere on the floor. The bars used columns in the same way.

A 25-piece gospel choir and a 10-piece band with a subset 4-piece group entertained guests continuously all evening, providing music for dancing.
