As it usually does, the selection of this year’s Ernst & Young Entrepreneurs of the Year started with hundreds of suggestions that led to dozens of detailed and formal nominations. After site visits and interviews, the field was narrowed to 22 finalists representing 16 companies, and then to nine grateful trophy-bearing individuals.

No single attribute leads to success as an entrepreneur—or to an Entrepreneur of the Year award. Competition for the awards is always intense, and the evaluation by the judges is invariably thoughtful and meticulous, as it should be.

On the following pages are 16 stories of inspiration and vision, commitment and perseverance, risk and innovation, leadership and achievement—achievement sometimes told in income statements and evaluations of market share, sometimes in tales of less tangible attributes, including challenge and aspiration.
