As a freshman at any college, there is so much to learn. Whether it’s finding student groups to join, the address of a laundromat, or which campus restaurants have the best food, first year students often feel lost. This fall, freshmen at the University of Minnesota were greeted with The U-Guide—a publication filled with just such handy information—the brainchild of Carlson School of Management students, including Ryan Broshar, Joseph Collins, and Travis Boisvert. The business captured first prize in the Minnesota Cup’s student competition.
“We thought students could use a resource that can guide you around campus and give advice that seniors know and freshmen are trying to find out,” says Broshar.
The guide also serves as a way for student groups, the University, and local and national businesses to market to students.
This fall, The U-Guide handed out 7,200 books to incoming freshman. Even though The U-Guide team will graduate this semester, they plan to maintain their business and even expand to other college campuses. The $5,000 prize they earned from the Minnesota Cup certainly will help that effort.
