Sandra Felemovicius is a contemporary artist who brings the sights, sounds, and colors of her native Mexico to Minnesota via warmly hued paintings. Felemovicius has lived in the Twin Cities for 15 years but she is still deeply rooted to the land of her birth through her work, family, and culture.

Twice a year Felemovicius exhibits her work at Rain Collective shows, and she also completes paintings on commission for businesses and individuals. Felemovicius creates abstractions portrayed with layers of color, using a combination of light, forms, and shapes to instill balance in each piece. But the heart of her paintings is the intertwining of her Mexican and Jewish heritages.

For Felemovicius, her career is also about regularly testing herself. “I want to learn something every day and always try to go for it, not matter what it is,” she says. Emigrating from Mexico was very difficult, but she gained inner strength from the challenge. “I had to really prove it to myself that I could survive here, and I did it. It’s a huge thing to come from Mexico and make my mark in the United States.”

Felemovicius and her husband became American citizens and made Minnesota their home, yet they continually strive to pass along their Mexican culture to their two children. They frequently visit their large extended family in Mexico City and try to imbue their immediate family life with a Mexican flavor, such as being more spontaneous instead of constantly scheduled.

Teaching others how to express themselves through art has been a constant thread in her career. Felemovicius has taught people of all ages, awakening in them a love for the arts. An active volunteer at her children’s school and for the Twin Cities Fine Arts Organization, she often donates her work to such causes as the North Memorial Foundation and the University of Minnesota.
