Latinos have called Minnesota home for more than 120 years, yet their story is often untold. Starting as migrant farmers and factory workers and eventually emerging as successful business owners and professionals, Latinos have long made an impact in Minnesota.
Latinos truly are a force to be reckoned with in all corners of the state, from the heart of the Twin Cities to suburbia and rural outposts north and south. Minnesota’s Latino population has more than tripled since the 1990 U.S. Census, increasing from nearly 55,000 to more than 175,000 in 2004. Whether it’s in real estate, health care, small business, technology, professional services, or agriculture, Latinos continue to be a powerful engine in the Minnesota economy.
In fact, more than 1,000 Mexican-American businesses alone operate in Minnesota, generating an estimated $200 million a year in sales, according to the Minneapolis Foundation. In south-central Minnesota, Latino workers in the agricultural industry add nearly $25million to the local economy.
