After earning his law degree in Mexico in 2000, Alejandro Suarez was happy working for a large Chicago law firm while living in Guadalajara. Because he was assisting American companies doing business in Mexico, he knew it would be helpful to have an understanding of U.S. business law. So he moved north to earn a master’s in law from the University of Texas in Austin.
Then everything changed. “I had planned to go back to Mexico,” says Suarez, who lives in Woodbury with his wife Claudia and their two sons. “But I learned about some U.S. law firms that wanted to have Latin American attorneys based in the U.S. to help their clients doing business in Latin America.”
That’s how Suarez wound up practicing international law at Fredrikson & Byron in Minneapolis. “I like helping American companies understand the business and cultural differences between the U.S. and Latin America, and how to do business in spite of those differences,” Suarez says. “I love the firm and the Twin Cities. It was the best decision I could have made.”
