Facet, based in Eden Prairie, has a couple of big clients—Cargill and the U.S. Census Bureau. Its Census Bureau work involves driving around in vans, snapping photographs of the roads at regular intervals, and filling up terabytes of disk space with those digital images. Facet makes software used in mapping applications for both government and business clients. In food processing, Retterath says, “we replace human inspection with cameras and computers, thus standardizing the grading and quality of processed food products.” The company is targeting more big clients in the geographical-search and mapping markets for 2006, including those who make in-vehicle navigation systems. Facet anticipates forming alliances with large Internet and software companies, which could bring aggressive expansion and large-scale venture capital financing.
