A hot company? St. Louis Park–based Coolibar manufactures clothing that helps reduce wearers’ exposure to skin-damaging ultraviolet rays. “We use specialty fabrics to make clothing that is cool, comfortable, and guaranteed to block 98 percent–plus of UV,” Barrow says. “Our customers are typically baby-boomer women who have experienced a health problem in their family related to overexposure to the sun”—e.g., skin cancer. Founded in 2001, Coolibar has more than doubled its revenues three years in a row and expected to eclipse $3 million in sales for 2005. Within three years, Coolibar expects to have more than $10 million in sales and more than 350,000 customers. In May, the company received $1.5 million in venture funding from Minnesota-based LFE Capital and Iowa-based AAVIN Ventures. In 2004, The Wall Street Journal gave a vote of confidence, rating Coolibar the “best overall” for sun-protective swimwear.
