A
16,000-square-foot mansion in Orono on Lake
Minnetonka was built in 1904 as a
summer house for a lumber baron. The new owner undertook a complete renovation
of the property. Aulik & Associates added a 2,000-square-foot detached
garage—connected to the house with a new porte cochére—which helped form an
entry courtyard. The concrete in the courtyard was finished to look aged, and
accented with red pavers. A quatrefoil bluestone-edged planting bed forms the
center of the courtyard design. The brick for the new garage was carefully
chosen and treated to match the house.
The porte cochére reintroduces access to the back of the house—both front and rear were originally designed with main entrances. Aulik restored the entrance on the façade facing the lake, adding a bluestone and red paver terrace and planting beds with statuary surrounded by bluestone retaining walls.
A structure at the lakeside that originally housed a generator for the house was remodeled as a space for entertaining, including a new patio and railing on its roof.
