A south Minneapolis homeowner, who also owns a restaurant, wanted a beautiful, functional backyard that included plenty of room to grow vegetables and herbs. Landscape designer Steve Modrow from the design firm Biota, LLC, planned a variety of spaces that worked well together, including raised beds for edible plantings.

A deck off the back of the house features a fireplace made of Waukesha White stone and a grill. The fireplace is backed by a custom-laser-cut screen made of Core-ten steel, which develops a rust patina but doesn’t disintegrate. The cut steel is repeated on trellises which are used for screening and to hold vegetable vines.

The grand bluestone walkway includes a decorative medallion and provides extra space for entertaining.
