Are you putting off buying an HD DVD or Blu-ray disc player, worried that you’ll pick the losing technology? (Perhaps that old Betamax VCR in your attic is fueling your fears?)

No need to pick sides in this battle. In January, LG was the first to introduce a hybrid machine that plays both hi-def formats. Now, its next-generation player is out. The Super Blu Player BH200 ($999) outputs images in 1080p video resolution at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second. It also supports several digital audio formats and the special interactive functions that some HD DVD and Blu-ray discs offer, and it sports a variety of AV connections, including HDMI.

Not to give you pause now that you’re ready to pull the trigger, but Samsung is poised to enter the hi-def hybrid fray. Samsung’s BD-UP5000 Duo HD Player ($1,049) is meant to hit store shelves this quarter. So, maybe you do still have some decision making to do.
