Garmin’s Forerunner 305 ($350) straps around your wrist like a watch, but tells much more than time. As you run, bike, swim, or engage in other sports, it monitors your speed, distance, pace, heart rate, and calories burned. All the while, a built-in global positioning system (GPS) tracks your every move—even on tree-covered trails or surrounded by an urban jungle.
The Forerunner 305 can keep tabs on 37 types of data and display them on its customizable screen. Cross-trainers will appreciate the ability to quickly switch between settings for different sports.
Using its GPS technology, the Forerunner 305 can automatically log a new lap every time you pass a specified location. It can also display a map and guide you toward a preset destination. Included computer software gives you tools to create training schedules and analyze data compiled during your workouts. (A subscription to compatible applications at MotionBased.com lets you share data and compete with athletes around the world.)
Cyclists might want to spring for Garmin’s GSC 10 bike accessory ($60), which wirelessly transmits speed and pedaling cadence to the Forerunner 305.
