A number 2 pencil is nice, but a better back-to-school supply might be the Disney Netpal computer ($350 at retailers including Toys “R” Us and Amazon). It’s designed for kids ages 6 to 12, but it’s no toy. Standard hardware and software include Microsoft Windows XP, a 9-inch LCD screen, integrated Wi-Fi, 1 GB of RAM, and an Intel Atom processor. What distinguishes the Netpal is a kid-friendly interface. They can select desktop themes featuring Mickey Mouse, Hannah Montana, or characters from Cars or Toy Story. Bundled e-mail and Web-browsing apps also are decked out in Disney imagery. Additional software includes Disney Pix for photo editing and Radio Disney for streaming live audio.
