Three ways to lighten up from Stevie Ray, the only holder of a bachelor’s degree in “theory and performance of comedy” from Minnesota State University at Moorhead, and cofounder of Stevie Ray’s Improv Company in Minneapolis. “In my research about humor, I discovered three laws of laughter that, if used correctly, ensure a more laugh-filled and stress-free life,” Ray says.

One

Laughter of the Unexpected In order for someone to laugh, there must be a surprise. Remember the last time someone told you a joke you’d already heard before? It was hard to laugh, right? Remember the last time you surprised someone with flowers? There was no joke, but besides smiling and giving you a hug, they probably laughed a little too. We need little switchups and surprises throughout the day to keep fresh. If you’re stuck in a rut, surprise someone and share the laugh.

Two

Laughter of Recognition Just as often as people laugh at a comedian, they say, “That same thing happened to me!” We love to connect through common experiences. Lighten up your day by sharing the events of your life. You’ll find that others have the same experiences, and you’ll laugh about it.

Three

Laughter of Superiority This idea actually originates with Plato and Aristotle. The rule is, you never laugh unless it’s at someone. All laughter needs a target, usually a person with whom everyone is familiar. And, contrary to what you might think, good-natured ribbing is a great way to make someone feel included in a group. If you aren’t comfortable making others the target, use yourself!
