Discussions of alternative energy strategies for the country often include mention of smart grids. A smart grid is essentially the layering of two-way communication technologies onto the existing energy transport and distribution network of power lines, utility substations, and energy users. Wireless communications along the energy grid allow for greater monitoring and control of power usage, which will offer utility companies and their customers a more efficient and cost-effective power system. Here we look at some local companies offering wireless technology that make the grid smarter.
Building the Network
New York–based Arcadian Networks has built a 56,000-square-mile smart grid network in Minnesota. (Arcadian has an office in Elk River.) Instead of relying completely on public cellular networks, the company’s wireless network uses primarily licensed spectrum, which the company believes will offer increased reliabilty for its clients. Utilities favor the “private network approach, so they have greater control and guaranteed coverage, since many of their assets are in remote locations,” says Mike Beasley, Arcadian’s vice president of sales and marketing.
Power generation and transmission company Great River Energy, based in Maple Grove, is using Arcadian’s network and is allowing its member electricity cooperatives to use it as well. The utilities—which together, manage approximately 600 substations and 600,000 electrical meters—are using the Internet protocol–based smart grid to monitor equipment and gather energy-usage information.
Extension Service
Currently, the energy industry mostly measures how much energy is used at each point on the grid, but not when it’s used. But when power is being consumed is critical information for utility companies. On a very hot day at 3:00 p.m., for example, when air conditioners are going full blast, brownouts can occur if the energy supply is insufficient. But smart grid technology is making it possible to monitor and even control power usage inside homes and businesses.
