Board meetings don’t have to be held in boring buildings. In fact, they don’t have to be held in buildings at all. The same is true for sales meetings, training sessions, or other corporate gatherings. Perhaps you’d prefer a shaded deck with a view?

Many companies are finding such charming venues on the shores of the scenic St. Croix River. Whether they’re looking for a day-long getaway for employees, a lovely lunch with clients, or a chance to blend business with outdoor recreation, they can find several options along the river. Some are suited for small, intimate gatherings. Some are best for outdoor picnics or events. Others can host hundreds of people for fancy parties and receptions. Each space has its own personality, its own special charms, and its own proximity to the St. Croix.

It’s a short drive to Afton from the heart of the metro area, but a trip to the historic Afton House Inn, situated on the shores of the St. Croix River, feels like a grand getaway. That might be because meetings held in the inn’s cozy conference rooms (equipped with high-speed internet access, LCD projectors, screens, and other meeting essentials) are often followed by a meal at the inn’s Catfish Saloon & Café or its upscale Wheel Room restaurant.

Some meeting planners even include a jaunt down the St. Croix on one of the inn’s three cruise boats, which can seat between 10 and 364 passengers. Or you could hold your meeting on the water. The boats, which have full bars and menus available, can be chartered for private meetings and receptions. And because the inn has 25 guest rooms—outfitted with Jacuzzis and gas fireplaces—companies can hold weekend retreats and extended meetings on site as well.
