MetroConnections of Minneapolis organized a convention for
Creative Memories, a scrapbooking-supply company based in St. Cloud, around a
The Wizard of Oz theme. The outside of the convention hall looked like Kansas,
with set pieces rendered in a sepia tone to evoke the first scenes in the movie.
Inside, costumed characters from the movie were there to greet the guests. Most
of the room was decorated with an Emerald City theme—gel ceiling lighting gave
off a green glow. Inspirational messages from the book the movie was based on
were displayed throughout the hall.
The event planner at Creative Memories suggested the theme. “The goal of the convention was to create ‘memory opportunities,’” says David Graves, the senior vice president of event production for MetroConnections. “The client wanted ‘wow’ props that attendees could pose in front of for photo opportunities.”
