Fiorella says that imagery should be appropriate, and not only in terms of ethnicity; clothing styles, hairstyles, and locations also need to be considered. Color palettes also differ from region to region: “For example, in China, colors are intense and very bold. In Japan, there’s more of a range of pastel colors that you wouldn’t find in China.”

Anime—a Japanese style of animation typified by characters with large eyes and exaggerated expressions—continues to rise in popularity, and Funimation Entertainment, a subsidiary of New Hope–based Navarre Corporation that publishes software, DVDs, video games, and accessories, promises to give customers better access to its anime videos. Funimation and New York–based online video company Joost agreed to create a channel specifically for Funimation’s animes. Fans can go to joost.com to watch episodes, interact with other fans, and share favorite videos. Funimation acquires anime series from Japan and distributes them in the U.S.


1on1Spanish.net, an Afton-based company, lets users take live Spanish lessons from professional instructors in Nicaragua via Skype, an Internet-based teleconferencing tool. The service costs about $10 to $14 per 50-minute session. Chaim Teitelbaum, CEO of the company, says 1on1Spanish.net caters to managers who want to communicate with their Hispanic workers and people in medical professions. Currently, 1on1 is providing Outback Steakhouse and Papa John’s restaurant mangers with Spanish lessons.
