Re-election self-interest among members of the Incumbent Party, coupled with the formidable lobbying power of charitable organizations and the housing industry, has prevented and will prevent any radical tax reform in the future. Consequently, let me suggest that we agitate for stopgap measures that will provide some relief over the long haul.
1. Let’s demand that we have a national holiday called Taxpayer Appreciation Day. Goodness knows we have all kinds of other state and federal holidays. One day a year when we actually acknowledge the contribution of those of us who pay all the bills would at least create the occasion for members of the political class to say nice things about us.
2. Let’s also demand that members of the political class at all levels state under oath that they have filled out all their tax forms without outside assistance.
If adopted, these proposals will go a long ways toward ensuring greater tax simplification in the future.
That’s my plan for tax reform that will actually thank you for your tax contributions, simplify the tax rules, and increase tax accountability. And unlike what you’ll hear from everyone in the Incumbent Party, this plan won’t cost you a penny.
Sincerely Yours,
Vance K. Opperman
Longtime Taxpayer
