The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development received a $6 million federal grant to train low-income and low-skilled residents of Clearwater and Ramsey counties for green-industry-related jobs.
The grant was announced by the U.S. Department of Labor on Wednesday.
Minnesota received the largest amount of grant money that the government made available to individual states.
The grant will train individuals for jobs in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries.
“These grants will help workers gain access to good jobs, while supporting the sort of statewide energy efficiency strategies that play a crucial role in building the green economy of the 21st century,” Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis said in a statement.
Some of the Minnesotans targeted by the grant include unemployed workers, low-income individuals, individuals with disabilities, individuals with criminal records, veterans, and high school dropouts.
A total of $190 million will be disbursed nationwide through 34 grants. The grants are a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
