A new fundraising Web site scheduled to launch November 2 will connect potential donors to a variety of nonprofits in Minnesota.

Called GiveMN, the site will provide donors with information about organizations that match their philanthropic goals and allow them to make online donations to any U.S. nonprofit by credit card.

Potential donors will be able to search for nonprofits by program type, geography, populations served, and other variables, in order to find the programs that best meet their giving objectives. The site also will allow users to easily track their giving, including offline contributions.

According to GiveMN, the median nonprofit raises less than 1 percent of its funds online, but e-philanthropy is significantly less expensive than traditional fundraising methods, like direct mail or grant writing.

GiveMN will sponsor promotions throughout the year that are designed to appeal to different types of givers, create new incentives for giving, and engage a broader audience. For example, one planned promotion will match gifts given to Minnesota charities via the site.

“Minnesotans have long led the nation in charitable giving and civic innovation, but we aren't fulfilling the great potential of online philanthropy,” Dana Nelson, executive director of GiveMN, said in a statement. “We believe GiveMN will help advance charitable giving in the Internet age. It will offer people a one-stop shop to explore and support their favorite causes.”

Some of GiveMN's founding partners include the Minnesota Community Foundation, the Blandin Foundation, Briggs and Morgan, Central Minnesota Community Foundation, Ecolab Foundation, F.R. Bigelow Foundation, Greater Twin Cities United Way, HealthPartners, Initiative Foundation, The Minneapolis Foundation, Northland Foundation, Northwest Minnesota Foundation, The Saint Paul Foundation, Southern Initiative Foundation, West Central Initiative Foundation, and Women's Foundation of Minnesota.
